Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have completed a major four-player trade ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, reshaping their squads with a focus on strengthening their all-round and bowling options. England’s Liam Livingstone and Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards will move to Chennai, while Indian pacer Khaleel Ahmed and Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis will join Hyderabad.
The trade, confirmed on November 5, gives both franchises an opportunity to address weaknesses exposed during the previous season. CSK have added two all-rounders to their squad, while SRH have strengthened their pace attack with two bowlers who bring different skills and experience to the shortest format.
Livingstone’s move is particularly notable because he will join CSK for a reduced contract fee of ₹6 crore, considerably lower than the ₹13 crore at which SRH originally acquired him.
Liam Livingstone Joins CSK at a Reduced Fee
Livingstone’s arrival is expected to provide Chennai with additional firepower in the middle order. The England international is known for his ability to hit big sixes, accelerate scoring during the middle and death overs, and contribute with both off-spin and leg-spin.
Despite his reputation as an explosive T20 batter, Livingstone had limited opportunities during IPL 2026, featuring in just two matches for Hyderabad. His move to Chennai offers him an opportunity to secure a more prominent role and make a stronger impact in the upcoming season.
The all-rounder has previously represented Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. He was part of Bengaluru’s title-winning squad in 2025 before moving to SRH.
For CSK, Livingstone’s versatility could prove valuable, particularly when the team needs to increase its scoring rate or introduce additional spin options depending on the match situation.
Jack Edwards Adds Another All-Round Option
Australian seam-bowling all-rounder Jack Edwards will also join Chennai at his existing contract fee of ₹3 crore.
Edwards was signed by SRH before making his international debut for Australia but missed the entire IPL 2026 season after being ruled out with a foot injury. Consequently, he is yet to make his IPL debut.
His ability to contribute with the bat and bowl medium-fast deliveries gives CSK another option when constructing their playing combination. His effectiveness in Indian conditions, however, will become clearer once he gets an opportunity to play in the tournament.
The move reflects Chennai’s interest in building a flexible squad with players capable of contributing in multiple departments.
Khaleel Ahmed Returns to Sunrisers Hyderabad
In exchange, SRH have secured left-arm fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed at his existing contract fee of ₹4.8 crore.
Khaleel previously represented Hyderabad between 2018 and 2021 before moving to Chennai. He enjoyed an impressive IPL 2025 campaign, taking 15 wickets in 14 matches for CSK.
His 2026 season was interrupted by a right quadriceps injury. He managed only five appearances before being ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.
Khaleel’s return gives Hyderabad an experienced Indian left-arm pacer who can provide variation with the new ball and offer additional options during different phases of an innings.
Nathan Ellis Strengthens SRH’s Death Bowling
Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis completes the trade, joining Hyderabad at his existing fee of ₹2 crore.
Ellis is recognised for his slower deliveries, variations and ability to bowl effectively during the death overs. These skills could help SRH manage high-pressure situations when opponents look to accelerate towards the end of an innings.
He missed IPL 2026 after sustaining a hamstring injury before the tournament. CSK had expected him to play an important role in their pace attack, but his absence forced the franchise to make alternative arrangements.
IPL 2027 Preparations Gather Pace
The four-player exchange comes as franchises prepare for the next IPL season and reassess their squad combinations. Chennai will hope Livingstone and Edwards improve their batting depth, while Hyderabad will look to Khaleel and Ellis to provide greater balance and flexibility in the bowling department.
The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa, with franchises expected to continue refining their squads before the event.
For CSK and SRH, the trade represents a strategic reshuffle rather than a straightforward exchange of players. Whether the new combinations deliver results will depend on fitness, playing opportunities and how effectively each franchise integrates its new recruits into its plans for IPL 2027.
