New Delhi witnessed fresh political tension on October 17 after Delhi Police placed Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke under preventive arrest, while All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora was released from custody. The two activists had been detained ahead of a planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest march at Connaught Place.
The police action took place on Friday, October 16, as organisers prepared for the demonstration in central Delhi. The protest was linked to demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Abhijeet Dipke to Appear Before Magistrate
Dipke remained in custody on Saturday after authorities initiated proceedings under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). These provisions relate to measures intended to prevent breaches of peace and preventive arrest.
He was expected to be produced before a Special Executive Magistrate later in the day. The proceedings are expected to determine the next steps in the preventive action taken against him.
Ratna Singh, the CJP’s legal head, said that Dipke had been arrested and was due to appear before the magistrate. She also raised concerns about his whereabouts, stating that lawyers had not been able to meet him at that point.
The circumstances surrounding his custody remained a key concern for the party as it sought information about the legal process and access to its founder.
Neha Bora Released After Detention
Bora, who heads the All India Students’ Association, was released after the completion of formalities under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. She had been taken into preventive custody on Friday ahead of the planned march.
Her release marked a change in the status of the two activists detained in connection with the protest preparations. Dipke, however, continued to face preventive proceedings and was scheduled to appear before the magistrate.
The detentions came amid heightened security arrangements in central Delhi, where authorities were preparing to manage the planned gathering and potential disruption to public movement.
Protest Focuses on Election Commission and Voter Rolls
The proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march was organised amid continuing criticism from activists and political groups over the revision of electoral rolls. Protesters have raised concerns about the SIR exercise and called for accountability from the Election Commission, including demanding Kumar’s resignation.
The allegations surrounding the voter-list revision have become a point of political contention. Critics have questioned the process and its potential impact on eligible voters, while the controversy has continued to draw attention from political groups and student organisations.
The police action ahead of the march added another development to the dispute, bringing the detention of activists and the handling of public demonstrations into focus.
With Bora released and Dipke’s appearance before the magistrate pending, attention remained on the legal proceedings and the organisers’ next steps. The developments also highlighted the continuing tensions between protest groups and authorities over demonstrations related to electoral issues in the national capital.
