Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, is expected to take part in protests organised by the INDIA bloc at the national level against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan.
The statement follows TVK’s participation in an opposition protest in Chennai on October 15, where political parties demanded action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process.
TVK’s involvement could expand the opposition campaign beyond Tamil Nadu, although its participation in future national-level demonstrations will depend on subsequent political decisions and coordination among alliance partners.
TVK Joins Chennai Protest Against SIR
The Chennai demonstration brought together leaders and representatives of parties associated with the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu. The protest focused on the SIR exercise and concerns raised by opposition parties about the way electoral rolls are being revised.
TVK was represented by School Education Minister A Rajmohan. VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and leaders from other opposition parties also attended the gathering.
The protest was organised amid a wider opposition campaign seeking accountability from the Election Commission. Participants argued that the revision process required greater transparency and questioned whether eligible voters could be affected by changes to electoral rolls.
The October 15 demonstration was TVK’s first participation in an agitation seeking the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner since the party formally joined the INDIA bloc earlier in October.
Thirumavalavan said TVK had become part of the opposition alliance’s Tamil Nadu unit and indicated that the party was expected to participate in similar protests at the national level in the future.
Opposition Questions Electoral Roll Revision
The SIR process has become a major point of political contention, with opposition parties alleging that changes to voter lists could lead to the deletion of eligible voters.
Several INDIA bloc constituents have demanded action against Gyanesh Kumar, arguing that the Election Commission must address their concerns about the revision exercise. They have also called for safeguards to ensure that legitimate voters are not excluded from electoral rolls.
The Election Commission’s work has faced sustained scrutiny from opposition leaders, who have raised questions about the procedures followed during the revision. The allegations remain disputed, and concerns raised by political parties should not be treated as established findings of wrongdoing.
The controversy has contributed to demonstrations in multiple locations, including protests in Delhi. Opposition parties have sought to turn their objections into a broader campaign focused on electoral transparency and voting rights.
Vijay’s Political Alliance Takes on Wider Significance
TVK’s participation comes at a time when political alignments in Tamil Nadu are changing following the party’s entry into the INDIA bloc. Its decision to join the alliance has created new possibilities for cooperation between Vijay’s party and Congress-led opposition groups.
The Chennai protest provided an early indication of how that relationship could operate on an issue extending beyond state politics. By joining the demonstration, TVK aligned itself with the bloc’s demand for scrutiny of the SIR process.
However, the extent of TVK’s future involvement in national-level protests remains to be seen. Participation in a state-level demonstration does not automatically establish the party’s role in every national campaign or determine how actively its senior leadership will engage.
The developments also come against the backdrop of differences among political parties in Tamil Nadu, where alliance arrangements have shifted following the state’s recent political changes.
What Happens Next?
The immediate question is whether TVK will move from participating in a Chennai demonstration to taking part in coordinated protests elsewhere in the country.
Such participation could strengthen the opposition’s efforts to maintain pressure over electoral-roll revision and the Election Commission’s handling of the process. It would also provide an opportunity for TVK to establish a more visible role within the INDIA bloc beyond Tamil Nadu.
For now, Thirumavalavan’s remarks point towards the possibility of broader cooperation. Any future demonstrations, however, will need to be assessed on the basis of formal announcements and confirmed participation by the parties involved.
