Rahul Gandhi Questions Centre Over Marco Rubio’s Mumbai Visit, Seeks Clarity on Jaishankar Meeting

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on October 16 questioned the central government over the planned meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian officials in Mumbai, criticising what he described as a lack of clarity from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). His remarks came after US Ambassador Sergio Gor indicated that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was expected to participate in discussions during Rubio’s upcoming visit to India.
Gandhi directed his criticism at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding greater clarity over the diplomatic arrangements. The political exchange comes as New Delhi and Washington prepare for discussions on trade, energy cooperation, strategic relations and investment.
The controversy began after details about Jaishankar’s expected participation emerged through the US ambassador rather than a formal announcement from India’s foreign ministry. Congress leaders questioned why information about a meeting involving a senior Indian minister had not been communicated directly by the government.
Congress Questions MEA’s Communication
The Congress party has raised concerns about how the proposed diplomatic engagement was announced. Party leaders argue that arrangements involving senior Indian and foreign officials should be communicated clearly through official channels.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh had also criticised the circumstances surrounding the announcement, questioning why the US ambassador was providing information about an Indian minister’s expected participation.
Gandhi’s latest comments extended the criticism to the prime minister, making the issue part of the broader political debate over the government’s handling of foreign affairs.
The government and the Bharatiya Janata Party had not publicly responded to Gandhi’s latest remarks at the time of reporting. The disagreement has therefore centred largely on the opposition’s demand for an explanation regarding the communication process.
Marco Rubio’s India Visit Scheduled for October 17–22
Rubio is scheduled to visit India from October 17 to 22 as part of a broader trip that also includes Uzbekistan. His itinerary in India includes Mumbai and Jamnagar in Gujarat.
The visit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation between India and the United States across several areas, including energy, trade, investment and strategic affairs. Discussions are also expected to address regional and international developments affecting both countries.
The planned engagement with Indian officials comes as the two governments continue efforts to deepen their economic relationship and maintain cooperation on shared strategic priorities.
Rubio’s programme is also expected to include interactions with business representatives, providing an opportunity to discuss investment opportunities and commercial ties between the two countries.
Trade Negotiations Remain a Key Priority
India and the United States have been working towards a bilateral trade agreement, with both sides seeking progress on outstanding issues. US Ambassador Sergio Gor has previously indicated that discussions were advancing, although some details remained to be resolved.
Trade negotiations have become an important part of the relationship as both countries look to expand market access, encourage investment and strengthen economic cooperation.
Energy is another significant area of engagement. Cooperation involving energy supplies, technology and investment could feature in broader discussions as India seeks to meet its growing energy requirements and the United States looks to expand commercial partnerships.
However, the precise agenda for the proposed Mumbai meeting and any agreements that might emerge have not been fully disclosed.
India-US Relations Continue Amid Policy Differences
The planned meeting takes place at a time when India and the United States are seeking to strengthen their strategic partnership while managing differences on trade and other policy matters.
The two countries cooperate in areas such as defence, technology, regional security and energy. At the same time, negotiations over economic issues require continued engagement between officials from both governments.
A meeting between Rubio and Jaishankar would offer an opportunity to discuss these priorities directly and assess progress on ongoing initiatives.
Political Questions Surround the Diplomatic Visit
For the Congress, the immediate issue is whether the Indian government adequately communicated the arrangements for Rubio’s meeting with Jaishankar. Gandhi’s remarks have turned the announcement into a domestic political issue just as preparations for the visit continue.
The diplomatic engagement itself is expected to focus on the broader India-US relationship, particularly trade, energy and strategic cooperation. Whether the dispute over the announcement prompts a response from the government remains unclear.
As Rubio’s visit approaches, attention will be on the discussions between the two countries and whether they produce progress on their shared economic and strategic priorities.
