India’s stock market delivered a powerful rally on Thursday, November 5, 2026, giving investors a major boost ahead of the festive season. The BSE Sensex jumped more than 2,000 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 climbed above the 24,500 mark as falling crude oil prices, renewed foreign investor buying and improving global sentiment lifted market confidence.
The sharp rally added nearly ₹8 lakh crore to the combined market capitalisation of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange by around 1:45 pm. The surge extended the market’s winning streak to six consecutive trading sessions, signalling a strong recovery after a period of volatility driven by geopolitical tensions and foreign fund outflows.
The Sensex advanced to approximately 79,330, gaining more than 2,000 points during the session. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 rose by 581 points to 24,548.55, crossing the 24,000 level for the first time since September 4.
The market’s strong performance reflected renewed optimism among investors following developments in the United States and a significant decline in international oil prices.
Why Did the Indian Stock Market Rally?
Three major factors supported Thursday’s gains: lower crude oil prices, fresh buying by foreign institutional investors and a strong overnight rally in US equities.
1. Crude Oil Prices Fall Nearly 9%
The sharp decline in crude oil prices emerged as one of the biggest triggers for the rally. Brent crude fell approximately 8.7% in the previous trading session, moving towards $94 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped to around $88.
For India, which imports a substantial portion of its crude oil requirements, cheaper energy can provide considerable economic relief. Lower oil prices help reduce the import bill, ease inflationary pressures and potentially support the rupee.
Businesses that depend heavily on fuel and transportation may also benefit from reduced operating costs, while lower energy expenses can improve corporate profitability.
2. Foreign Investors Return to Indian Equities
Foreign institutional investors also provided significant support to the domestic market. They purchased Indian equities worth ₹7,284 crore on Wednesday, marking their highest single-day investment since October 2025.
The buying represented a continuation of positive inflows after months of substantial foreign selling. Sustained investment from overseas funds could provide additional support to major Indian stocks and strengthen market sentiment.
However, investors will closely monitor whether these inflows continue in the coming sessions.
3. US Election Results Lift Global Sentiment
Global markets also responded positively to the Democratic Party’s sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, which resulted in a shift in control of Congress away from Republicans.
Investors are assessing whether the changed political balance could increase pressure on President Donald Trump’s administration to reconsider aspects of its economic and foreign policies, particularly those connected with the conflict involving Iran.
The S&P 500 gained 1.6% overnight, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed approximately 3%. The Nasdaq Composite also advanced, reinforcing positive sentiment across international markets.
What Should Investors Watch Next?
Despite the strong gains, market participants will need to assess whether the rally can sustain its momentum. Crude oil movements, foreign investment flows, corporate earnings and developments in the Middle East are likely to remain important factors.
Lower oil prices and continued foreign buying could support Indian equities in the near term. However, renewed geopolitical tensions or a reversal in global investment sentiment could trigger fresh volatility.
Thursday’s rally has provided considerable relief to investors, but sustained gains will depend on whether improving global conditions translate into lasting confidence in the Indian economy and corporate earnings.
