A 19-year-old man has been arrested in the US state of Illinois over an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship, after a colleague reported disturbing messages and the suspect reportedly said his firearm had malfunctioned. The case has raised concerns about hate-driven threats against religious communities and the importance of reporting warning signs before violence occurs.
The suspect, Alexandros Paporakis, from Palatine, faces felony charges related to making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. Investigators believe the alleged plan may have targeted a major Hindu temple in Aurora, although police have said the precise intended location remains under investigation.
Co-Workers Help Alert Authorities
According to prosecutors, Paporakis worked at a fast-food restaurant in the Chicago suburbs. A colleague told investigators that he had repeatedly expressed white supremacist views, made hostile comments about people of different racial backgrounds and voiced particular hatred towards Indians.
Prosecutors said the suspect discussed an alleged attack with a colleague in the days before the planned date. He reportedly described the following Sunday as a significant day, raising further concern among people who had heard his statements.
On October 11, the colleague received communications in which Paporakis allegedly said that his firearm had malfunctioned and that he had left the location quickly. Prosecutors said he subsequently shared messages and images relating to the alleged incident, along with a document describing his extremist beliefs and violent intentions.
The colleague and another co-worker then contacted emergency services. Their reports helped authorities investigate the threat and locate the suspect.
Investigators Examine Extremist Document
Law enforcement officers examined electronic communications and a document attributed to Paporakis that allegedly outlined plans for mass violence. Investigators said the material contained white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology, alongside threats directed at several racial and religious communities, including people of Indian origin.
Authorities also searched the suspect's residence and recovered a firearm, ammunition and tactical equipment. Items associated with extremist ideology were reportedly found during the search.
The evidence is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged plan, its intended target and the suspect's motivations.
Police have not publicly confirmed the exact temple that may have been targeted. However, authorities notified law enforcement agencies in Aurora, which coordinated outreach to Hindu places of worship in the area.
The involvement of federal investigators has also been reported as officials work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Suspect Remains in Custody
Paporakis was arrested on October 11. He was subsequently charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a weapon covered by state restrictions.
A judge ordered that he remain in custody while the criminal case proceeds. His next court appearance was scheduled for October 30.
The allegations have not yet been established at trial, and the suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence under US law. Investigators continue to examine the evidence and determine whether additional charges may be appropriate.
Indian Community and Religious Safety in Focus
The alleged plot has drawn attention to the safety of religious institutions and the risks posed by extremist hatred. Places of worship are community centres where people gather for prayer, festivals and cultural activities, making threats against them a serious public safety concern.
Indian officials welcomed the prompt response by US law enforcement following the arrest. The incident also highlighted the value of cooperation between colleagues and police when credible threats emerge.
Security experts have repeatedly emphasised the importance of taking specific threats seriously, preserving relevant evidence and informing authorities rather than confronting a potentially dangerous individual directly.
The investigation remains ongoing. For the Hindu community in the Chicago area, the case underscores the importance of protecting religious freedom and ensuring that people can attend places of worship without fear of targeted violence.
