India’s leading golfers are preparing for a demanding test against an international field of elite players at the DP World India Championship, where home advantage will be matched by the pressure of competing against some of the biggest names in professional golf.
The tournament offers Indian players an important opportunity to measure their performance against established international competitors on home soil. With world-class talent expected to feature, the event is set to test the golfers’ consistency, course management and ability to handle pressure across four rounds.
Playing in front of a home crowd could provide an additional boost for Indian participants. However, competing against experienced players from the international circuit will require precision, strategic decision-making and sustained concentration throughout the tournament.
The competition will feature 144 golfers, including 27 Indian professionals, with a total prize fund of US$4 million. Seven Major champions are expected to compete, making the championship one of the most prominent events on India's professional golf calendar.
Shubhankar Sharma Returns in Winning Form
Shubhankar Sharma enters the championship with renewed confidence after winning the Kapil Dev Invitational Tour Championship the previous week. The two-time DP World Tour winner will look to carry that momentum into a tournament featuring some of the strongest players in international golf.
Anirban Lahiri will also be an important part of India's challenge. Returning after a seven-week break, Lahiri has focused on fitness, recovery and mental preparation as he seeks to improve on a difficult season.
Gaganjeet Bhullar adds further experience to the home contingent after recent success on the Indian Golf Premier League circuit. Other Indian players expected to attract attention include Saptak Talwar, Khalin Joshi, Veer Ahlawat and Yuvraj Sandhu.
Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood Lead International Field
The international lineup will be led by Rory McIlroy, a six-time Major champion and one of the sport's most prominent figures. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood will return to Delhi seeking another victory after winning the inaugural edition.
The field also includes Major champions Justin Rose, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson and Shane Lowry. Aaron Rai, the PGA Championship winner, will make his debut at the event, while other leading international competitors will add depth to the contest.
Delhi Golf Club to Test Accuracy and Strategy
The championship will take place at Delhi Golf Club from October 15 to 18. Its tree-lined fairways and demanding layout are expected to reward golfers who combine accurate shot-making with disciplined course management.
For Indian professionals, the tournament offers more than an opportunity to compete for the title. It provides valuable experience against elite international opponents and a chance to demonstrate the progress of Indian golf before a home audience.
The event also carries significance for domestic players competing on the professional tour. Strong performances could strengthen their standing in the season rankings and create further opportunities to compete at higher levels.
With experienced Indian golfers, emerging domestic talent and an impressive international field assembled in New Delhi, the championship is set to provide a major test for the home contingent. The key question will be whether India's golfers can turn their familiarity with local conditions into results against some of the world's best players.
