NXNative Brings Nintendo Switch Games to iPhone, iPad and Mac Without Traditional Emulation

A new open-source project called NXNative is making it possible to run selected Nintendo Switch games as native applications on Apple devices, opening up new possibilities for mobile and desktop gaming. The technology allows compatible games to run directly on Apple silicon rather than relying on conventional console emulation.

The project has attracted attention because it could bring popular Nintendo titles to iPhones, iPads and Macs, including games that have not received official releases for Apple platforms. Its growing compatibility list also demonstrates how developers are finding new ways to adapt software across different hardware systems.

How NXNative Runs Switch Games on Apple Devices

NXNative uses the fact that Nintendo Switch hardware and modern Apple processors share the ARM-based instruction architecture. This common foundation allows the project's software to adapt game code for Apple's chips without having to emulate the console's processor in the traditional way.

Instead, NXNative provides replacement components for parts of the Switch operating system and translates the console's graphics instructions into Apple's Metal graphics framework. This enables supported games to operate as applications on compatible Apple devices.

The process is not entirely automatic. Users need a Mac computer with the required development tools to build an application from their own game files. The resulting app can then be installed on a supported iPhone or iPad, while Apple silicon Macs can run versions packaged for macOS.

NXNative is an independent community project and is not affiliated with Nintendo or the publishers of the games it supports.

Popular Nintendo Games Feature on the Compatibility List

The project's compatibility list includes more than 60 tested titles, although performance and functionality vary between games. Some work relatively well, while others may contain graphical glitches, missing features or startup problems.

Notable games on the list include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Metroid Dread.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are also included among the tested titles. The latter is listed with offline functionality, highlighting that not every feature available on the original console necessarily carries over.

Some compatible games can also run at up to 60 frames per second when used with particular updates, compared with their original 30-fps performance on the Switch. However, these results depend on the individual game and its configuration rather than representing a universal improvement across the library.

Hardware Requirements Limit Compatibility

NXNative requires relatively recent Apple hardware. On iPhones, it supports the iPhone 15 Pro or newer models with an A17 Pro chip or later, running iOS 26 or a later compatible version. iPads require an M1 chip or newer and iPadOS 26 or later. Apple silicon Macs are also supported.

A Mac is needed to build the applications, along with development software and sufficient storage space. Larger games can require substantial free space because the generated app includes the game's data.

Users must supply their own game files and the necessary console keys. NXNative does not distribute Nintendo games, and creating an application does not guarantee that every title will run successfully.

Limitations Remain Despite the Breakthrough

The project still has several limitations. Online functionality and amiibo support are among the known issues, while some games experience sound or graphical problems. Compatibility can also depend on the specific game version being used.

Nevertheless, NXNative represents an interesting development for Apple gaming. By adapting existing console software to Apple silicon, it demonstrates a route for running selected games beyond their original hardware without requiring a conventional emulator.

Its longer-term significance will depend on improvements to compatibility, stability and performance. For now, the project offers a promising technical demonstration, but it does not replace official Nintendo releases or guarantee a seamless experience across all Apple devices.
