Indian information technology stocks staged a strong recovery on October 9, 2026, led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), whose shares climbed nearly 5% following its September-quarter earnings announcement. The rally lifted the combined market capitalisation of India's five largest listed IT companies by ₹56,334 crore, as investors focused on earnings performance and artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities despite fresh uncertainty surrounding US employment certification restrictions.
TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Wipro and Tech Mahindra all traded higher during the session. The gains indicated improving investor sentiment towards the sector, even as companies assessed the potential implications of recent US restrictions affecting employment-based green card processing.
TCS Leads IT Stock Rally After Quarterly Results
TCS emerged as the biggest contributor to the sector's gains. Its shares rose 4.73% to ₹2,173.55, increasing the company's market capitalisation by approximately ₹31,857 crore to ₹7,82,700 crore.
The company's September-quarter results provided an important boost to market confidence. TCS reported consolidated net profit of ₹13,884 crore, representing a 15% increase from the corresponding period last year. Revenue reached ₹73,188 crore, supported by business activity across its international markets and technology services portfolio.
Investors also paid attention to the company's artificial intelligence business. TCS reported annualised AI revenue of $3.1 billion, highlighting the growing contribution of AI-related services to its operations.
The company recorded second-quarter deal wins worth $9.6 billion, excluding Porsche and Best Buy. These contract wins offered an indication of continuing client demand, although converting new business into revenue will remain important for future growth.
Infosys, HCLTech and Wipro Join the Advance
The positive momentum extended across other major IT companies.
Infosys shares gained 2.23% to ₹1,016.80, adding approximately ₹10,206 crore to its market value. HCL Technologies advanced 2.7% to ₹1,213.10, while Wipro rose 2.65% to ₹162.80. Tech Mahindra also moved higher, gaining 1.76% to ₹1,522.
Together, the five companies added ₹56,334 crore in market capitalisation during the trading session, reflecting a broad-based improvement rather than a rally limited to a single stock.
However, analysts continue to monitor demand conditions, particularly in North America, where some clients remain cautious about discretionary technology spending. Projects involving artificial intelligence, enterprise modernisation and the consolidation of technology vendors are emerging as important areas of opportunity.
Why US Employment Restrictions Did Not Derail Sentiment
The gains came despite a US decision to suspend several technology companies from the Permanent Labour Certification Programme, commonly known as PERM. The programme is associated with the employment-based green card process, and the restrictions raised concerns about workforce mobility and hiring practices.
Market participants appeared to view the immediate financial impact as potentially manageable. TCS indicated that the suspension was unlikely to materially affect its workforce strategy or customer engagements, citing its limited use of PERM applications in recent years.
Indian IT companies have also increasingly relied on local hiring in the United States and expanded offshore delivery operations. These approaches may reduce their dependence on employment-based immigration processes, although the longer-term effects of regulatory changes remain uncertain.
AI Growth and Client Spending Remain Key Factors
Beyond the immediate rally, the outlook for Indian IT stocks will depend on companies' ability to sustain revenue growth, protect margins and turn AI-related demand into profitable business.
AI-powered engineering, cloud adoption and enterprise technology upgrades could support new contracts. At the same time, pricing pressure, cautious client budgets and uncertainty over global economic conditions remain potential challenges.
The October 9 advance suggests investors were willing to prioritise quarterly earnings and longer-term technology opportunities over immediate regulatory concerns. Whether the recovery continues will depend on subsequent earnings, demand trends and the financial impact of changes in US employment policy.
