KERALA, INDIA | TECHNOLOGY & LIFESTYLE
In many Indian homes, a person's jathakam is a booklet written by hand by the family astrologer. It is kept for decades, brought out before a wedding or a big decision, and almost impossible to replace once it is lost, damaged by water, or the astrologer who wrote it has passed away. Orra, an astrology app built in Kerala, was made for exactly that moment. Listed on Google Play as Orra: Kundli & Vedic Astrology, it calculates a person's full birth chart from their date, time and place of birth, and turns it into readings, reports and answers in the language they think in.
Built on real calculations, and checked against real charts
Most horoscope apps give everyone born under the same sun sign the same forecast. Orra starts from the individual chart instead. Its engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris, the astronomical data used by professional astrology software, with the Lahiri ayanamsa that Indian astrologers follow.
The team tested it before asking anyone to trust it. Charts were checked against more than 100 published birth records, including tricky daylight-saving and time-zone changes in over 15 countries. In one test, Orra's chart was compared with a handwritten Malayalam jathakam prepared by a Kerala astrologer in 1964. The ascendant matched to within five arcminutes, every planet position still legible in the old booklet matched, and the birth star and first dasha period were exact.
Your jathakam, written again
For families who have lost the original, Orra can produce a full jathakam as a PDF of around 30 pages, in Malayalam or English. It follows the Kerala layout people recognise: the rasi chart, planet positions, the birth star, and a dasha table covering the full 120-year cycle with the person's age beside every period. It is designed in black and white so it still reads clearly after a photocopy, and a copy is emailed so it is never lost again. A free sample is available in the app before anyone pays.
Porutham that shows its working
Marriage matching is one of the most important uses of astrology in India, and one where a single unexplained number can cause real worry. Orra's kundli matching gives the standard 36-point Ashtakoot (porutham) score, then lists each of the eight factors separately. Doshas such as Rajju and Bhakoot are shown on their own, with the traditional reasons a dosha may be cancelled, instead of being quietly folded into the score. Families can see exactly why a match scored the way it did.
Ask Orra, by text or by voice
Ask Orra lets users ask a question about their own life, such as a job change or a relationship, and get an answer drawn from their chart, their current dasha and the day's planetary positions. Questions can be typed or spoken, and Orra can reply aloud. The app is available in 10 languages: English, Malayalam, Hindi, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Korean and Chinese, so someone's grandparents can use it in their own language.
Five traditions, one daily companion
Alongside Vedic astrology and Jyotish, Orra covers Western astrology, Chinese astrology, numerology and palmistry. Experienced users will find Vimshottari dasha, Navamsa and other divisional charts, Shadbala, Varshaphala, KP-based prashnam and muhurta tools. For everyday use there is a personal daily reading, a panchang with tithi, nakshatra, Rahu Kalam and the year's festivals, moon-phase alerts, and Vedic baby-name suggestions based on Namakarana traditions.
Honest about what astrology is
Orra presents its readings as guidance for reflection, not guaranteed predictions. It deliberately does not predict death or serious illness, and it reminds users not to replace medical, legal or financial advice with a reading. Through Orra Labs, the team also runs an opt-in study that compares astrological timing with how users actually report feeling day to day. The aim is to learn what genuinely helps people, not just what sounds good.
From the founder
“I grew up in Kerala, where the jathakam is part of every big family decision. But most people can't read their own chart, and good astrologers are getting harder to find. I wanted to build something that gets the calculations exactly right, explains them honestly, and speaks to people in their own language. That is what Orra is.”
