India’s national selection committee is preparing to finalise the squads for the upcoming New Zealand tour, with former India spinner Pragyan Ojha currently overseeing the panel on an interim basis. The selection process has gained attention following the end of Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector.
Ojha, who has represented India in 24 Test matches, is temporarily heading the four-member selection committee. He is joined by Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and R P Singh. The panel is expected to announce the squads for the New Zealand tour in the coming week.
Gambhir Holds Selection Discussions
India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently met all four members of the selection committee in Guwahati as the team prepared for the second ODI against the West Indies.
The meeting took place at the Barsapara Stadium while the West Indies squad was training. Agarkar was not present, as his tenure had been nearing its conclusion. The discussions were understood to have focused on preparations for the New Zealand tour and the squads required across different formats.
The selection committee faces a substantial workload because India will have teams competing across senior and India A assignments during the New Zealand programme.
Three Formats on India’s New Zealand Schedule
India’s senior team is scheduled to tour New Zealand from October 22 to November 27. The trip will begin with a five-match T20I series, followed by five ODIs and two Tests.
The opening T20I is scheduled in Christchurch on October 22. The ODI leg begins in Auckland on November 4, while the Test series is scheduled to start in Wellington on November 19. The second Test will be played in Christchurch.
Alongside the senior team, India A also has a three-Test programme in New Zealand between October 24 and November 10. This means selectors must simultaneously consider the requirements of the main squad and the development pathway involving India A.
Player Workload Could Influence Selection
The scheduling of the ODI and Test series creates an additional selection challenge. The final ODI is scheduled for November 15, while the first Test begins only four days later in Wellington.
As a result, players selected for both formats may need to be released from the ODI group early so they can prepare for the Test series. Managing workloads and ensuring adequate preparation could therefore become an important part of the selection discussions.
The New Zealand assignment is also expected to provide the Indian team management with an opportunity to assess combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Ojha Takes Charge During Selection Transition
Ojha’s interim role comes at an important point for Indian cricket. With Agarkar’s tenure ending, the selection committee is operating under temporary leadership while the process for appointing a permanent chief selector continues.
Ojha has the most Test appearances among the four current selectors and is reportedly in contention for the full-time position. For now, however, his immediate responsibility is to help guide the panel through a demanding selection cycle.
With multiple squads to finalise and a packed international calendar ahead, the upcoming announcement will provide the first clear indication of India’s plans for the New Zealand tour across T20Is, ODIs and Tests.
