The 2026 Asian Games officially concluded in Nagoya on October 4, bringing more than two weeks of competition across dozens of sporting disciplines to an end. India finished its campaign in fourth place in the overall medal standings with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.
The closing ceremony was held at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya, where athletes from across Asia gathered for the final celebrations. The event formally brought the Aichi-Nagoya Games to a close and began the transition toward the next edition, which will be held in Doha in 2030.
India Ends Campaign With Strong Top-Four Finish
India's 85-medal haul secured fourth position behind China, Japan and South Korea. China dominated the final standings with 341 medals, including 169 gold. Japan followed with 269 medals, while South Korea finished third with 150.
For India, the campaign produced several notable achievements across different sports. Athletics was among the country's biggest medal contributors, while shooting and archery also played important roles in the overall tally.
India also recorded several historic results during the Games. Among the notable performances were breakthrough results in archery, shooting and golf, alongside gold-medal performances in team sports.
The Indian men's hockey team successfully defended its Asian Games title, while the women's hockey side improved on its previous medal performance by winning gold. India also retained its Asian Games cricket title after defeating Pakistan in the men's T20 final.
Neeru Dhanda Carries Indian Flag
Shooter Neeru Dhanda was selected as India's flag-bearer for the closing ceremony. Her selection followed an impressive campaign in Aichi-Nagoya, where she won two gold medals and a silver.
Her performance was one of the highlights of India's shooting campaign and added to a series of strong individual results achieved by the Indian contingent.
The closing ceremony gave participating athletes an opportunity to celebrate the conclusion of the Games before the formal handover to the next host city.
Doha Takes Over for 2030
One of the key moments of the ceremony was the official transition from Aichi-Nagoya to Doha. The Asian Games flag was handed over to representatives of Qatar, which will host the continental sporting event in 2030.
The 2026 Games featured athletes from 45 Asian countries and included 469 gold-medal events, making it one of the largest editions of the Asian Games. More than 350 records were reported to have been broken during the competition, including at least 50 world records.
India Looks Ahead After Nagoya
India's fourth-place finish provides a strong foundation for the next phase of its Asian Games programme, although the final tally was lower than the country's record performance at the previous edition in Hangzhou.
The Nagoya campaign nevertheless produced new champions, historic results and strong performances across multiple disciplines. With the next Asian Games scheduled for Doha in 2030, India's focus will now shift toward developing the athletes and sporting programmes that can turn these performances into sustained success at future international competitions.
