New Delhi is once again set for a potential protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), with the group planning a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10. The organisers have informed Delhi Police about the proposed gathering and received an acknowledgement, but formal permission for the event has not yet been granted.
The proposed demonstration comes amid the CJP's continuing campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The group has said its movement will continue until its demand for the CEC's removal is addressed. CJP representative Saurav Das said the October 10 programme is intended to have a broader Gen-Z character rather than being limited to the party's own supporters.
Why the protest is significant
The planned demonstration follows a series of protests and confrontations involving the CJP and other groups over issues concerning the Election Commission. The organisation has been seeking greater accountability from election authorities and has made the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar one of its central demands.
The proposed Delhi gathering is therefore being closely watched because authorities have already taken preventive measures in the New Delhi district during recent demonstrations.
BNSS Section 163 remains a key factor
A major issue surrounding the October 10 event is the continued enforcement of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the New Delhi area. The provision is used to impose restrictions on assemblies and other public activities when authorities consider them necessary for maintaining public order.
Recent orders in the New Delhi district have restricted unauthorised gatherings, demonstrations and processions. At Jantar Mantar, protests generally require prior approval from the authorities.
This means the CJP's notification to the police does not by itself amount to permission to hold the demonstration. The final decision from the authorities will determine whether the October 10 programme can proceed in the proposed form.
Police decision remains awaited
For now, the status of the CJP's October 10 protest remains unresolved. The organisation has submitted information about the planned demonstration, while Delhi Police has yet to provide the required approval.
The development comes after earlier CJP-linked demonstrations in Delhi faced restrictions and police action. A Delhi court also recently granted bail to 17 people arrested during an anti-Election Commission protest, while noting that peaceful protest is protected but unlawful conduct and violence cannot be permitted.
With the proposed October 10 gathering approaching, attention is now on whether permission will be granted and what conditions, if any, authorities may impose on the demonstration.
